The Looking Glass
Part I, Refraction

Common Ground

Imperial workers form a black or red alliance
in a microcosm of civilized behavior,
rallying to a cry of “Serve the Queen of Ants!”
Meanwhile bees in their communal labor
show others where the flowers are in a ritual dance
taught them by our common Savior.

Who but the Auditor that periodically inspects
could speak to and be loved by all the inserts?

The Existential Burden

In pack and hive and herd and troop, in school and warren,
creatures hunt and hide and work and die together –
it is as it was and ever shall be, as Eve and Adam found in Eden,
once they ate that fruit of the knowledge of Forever
that gave them self-consciousness, with its existential burden,
but which from our Origins it did our species sever.

Did the Creator create an adversarial devil by mistake?
Adam’s beard still hides Eve’s inconsolable heartache.

The Reflective Creature

The reflective creature appeared as the natural culmination
of myriad primitive, yet preordained, experiments in form.
Every way of knowing produced this grand accumulation,
weighing down the brow of early man to misinform –
man is the highest of the high, at least in his own estimation,
this arrogance belying the weakness of the human form.

The ego emerges from hard shells of instinct it can almost recollect
to experience the mastery promised by the unconditioned intellect.
